Instead of focusing on just one area of science, students can take courses in biology, chemistry, physics, mathematics, computer science, geosciences, environmental science, and engineering.

A general science degree is useful for a wide range of career options, particularly for students interested in health-related fields (including medicine, dentistry, physical therapy, occupational therapy, and medical technology). General science, when combined with a second major or minor in English, prepares students for writing careers in science, technology, or natural history. A student must complete university, college, and departmental requirements to earn a B.S. with a major in General Science. The following hours are required:

General Education courses totaling 46 hours

Most General Science majors do not complete 46 hours of coursework solely to fulfil university General Education requirements. Instead, they frequently take six hours of coursework that fulfils both the six hours of diversity and the six hours of distribution requirements, as well as the seven-hour University General Education natural sciences distribution requirement by completing major courses. In such cases, the total number of credit hours taken solely to fulfil General Education requirements is limited to 33 or less.

College breadth requirement of 12-19 hours, major courses lasting 64-65 hours, electives (3-11 hours), and 120 total hours.

The B.S. degree with a major in general science includes 49-50 credits of natural science courses as outlined below, as well as 15 credits of cognate coursework chosen in collaboration with the advisor from complementary disciplines. Students in the Arts and Sciences must complete 27 credits of upper division coursework as part of their degree.
